10 Style Hacks to Improve Your Look Instantly

Nov 27, 2017

At Barakat Bespoke we believe in dressing well. When you look great, you feel great which gives you all the confidence you need to take on the day. We understand that this is a time consuming process so we put together our top 10 style hacks that will save you time and have you looking your best in no time.

1. Invest in a classic blazer

You can never go wrong in a classic navy blazer with gold buttons. Dress it over a nicely pressed shirt and you will instantly transform your entire look. This wardrobe staple should be a life long companion. Whether you pair it with denim or nice slacks, this classic never goes out of style.

Style tip: A super 120’s half lined blazer is perfect for year round wear and will last you longer through regular wear.

2. Add some color to your outfit

The easiest way to revamp your look is to add a splash of color in your accessories. Use a bright pocket square to liven up your jacket or a fun pattern on a tie. A small flower lapel pin adds a fun detail to casual sport coats.

Style tip:  Avoid overdoing the accessories. Using all of the above accessories at once will be overkill. Opt for two out of the three. When in doubt, less is more.

3. Go see a barber

A barber can work wonders for your look. We recommend seeing your local barber every two weeks. This keeps you looking well groomed and put together without having to rush out for last minute haircuts when an event comes up.

Style tip: A weekly trip for a beard trim or hot shave will improve the look and feel of your skin.

4. Keep your collar stiff

Collar stays are a must anytime you wear a collared shirt, and I don’t mean the plastic ones that come pre packed in your shirt collar. Go ahead and shell out a few bucks for nice metal collar stays, these will not melt into your shirt when you forget to take them out before pressing.

Style tip: Purchase metal stays with magnets for a more constructed collar under suits and blazers.

5. Hire a tailor

A well tailored suit can instantly make you look leaner and taller, and who doesn’t want that?

But beware, not all tailors are created equal. Find someone that not only does good work, but also understands your style and wardrobe goals.

Style tip: Instead of purchasing an entirely new wardrobe due to losing or gaining a few pounds, take your items to a tailor to help you resize them appropriately. A good tailor can help you sort out what is salvageable and what is not.

6. Wear the right shoes

Nothing will ruin your outfit faster than wearing the wrong shoes. Investing on the front end will save you money in the long run. Look for leather soles and calf leather uppers.

Cap toe oxfords will get you through most occasions and a nice pair of brown wingtips are great for everyday wear.

Style tip: See a cobbler regularly to keep your shoes in great shape for years to come.

7. Denim that does double duty

Buying the right type of denim can be a daunting task for many men. There are so many different fits, styles, and washes. Your best bet is to go for a dark blue raw denim that can be easily worn with classic sport coats or with your favorite weekend tee. Raw denim will get lighter over time and mold to the wearers body, making it very comfortable.

Style tip: Raw denim should fit snuggly during the first few wears. It will stretch naturally so be sure to go down about one size otherwise you will be stuck with baggy denim.

8. Avoid belts

If you need to wear a belt then you’re more than likely wearing the wrong size pant. Belts tend to wear out the finer trouser fabrics and can stain them, they also make you look larger by cutting you off at the waist, who wants that? Go without a belt for a more streamlined, clean look.

Style tip: Purchase trousers that have adjustable side tabs, not only will these keep you looking  stylish, they are also slimming.

9. Ditch the dryer (and your dry cleaner)

If your are using a dryer, you are destroying your clothes, plain and simple. All the dryer is doing is breaking down the fabric and fading colors. Utilize the hand wash setting on your washing machine and hang dry. Use the lowest heat setting on your iron when touching up wrinkles.

Style tip: Invest in an at home garment steamer. Its an easy way to freshen up clothes in between washes and much easier to use than a traditional iron. Think of all the money you’ll save not going to the cleaners.

10. Keep the jewels under wraps

Undergarments usually come as a second thought to guys when getting dressed. It is very important to know what to wear underneath your clothing. The best option under anything is  a nicely fitted pair of organic cotton boxer briefs. They are comfortable, breathable, and will keep everything in place. They are also flattering on all body types.

Style tip: Go for darker solid colors and have some lighter options such as grey to wear underneath light colored pants.
